While on a long photo road trip early in the series though Pennsylvania, I came across this wonderful, original wooden paddle wheel ferry. It is one of the last operating paddle wheel ferries operating in Pennsylvania. Even thought I usually keep exact records, I was having so much fun with taking this image; I forgot to record where the ferry was located. I’ve always asked, at each one of my shows across the country, if anyone knew where this ferry was located. One day in the mail, I received an unaddressed letter with a photo enclosed of an historical marker describing the ferry. Amazing! Here’s what it said…
“In 1825 the first ferry was poled across the Susquehanna. Paddle-wheel boats went into operation in 1873 as cargo-carrying barges. They are the only ones still in operation across the Susquehanna.
This scenic, safe ride takes you across one of the widest points of the Susquehanna River, which is one mile at the crossing. ”
