Let me first say that, besides being an avid photographer, I am a true Rail Fan! I’ve traveled across the country shooting this series of photographs and I’ve also crossed the country riding steam trains of all shapes and sizes.I visited here before it became the Steamtown National Historic Site.
Steamtown occupies the Scranton railroad yard of the former Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, one of the earliest rail lines in northeastern Pennsylvania. The large collection of standard-gauge steam locomotives and freight and passenger cars was that F. Nelson Blount, assembed in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1984, 17 years after Blount’s untimely death, the Steamtown Foundation for the Preservation of Steam and Railroad Americana, Inc. brought the collection to Scranton. When Steamtown National Historic Site was created, the yard and the collection became part of the National Park System. If you like trains, it’s worth a trip to see this wonderful collection and take a ride on the excursion train.
