While traveling around the Eastern Shore of Virginia, the byways led to many finds in my search for the “icons”. The Exmore Diner was such a find. Located on the business bypass of Rt. 13, it is well off the main highway these days, but was once on the main road through the Eastern Shore. A favorite to the locals, the diner is a fine example of the small chrome diners of the 50’s, cooking up home‑cooked meal daily.
When I was setting up for this photograph, I asked one of the patrons going into the diner if he would pull back so I could get a full shot of the diner (which was still partially blocked by cars). He graciously complied and went into the diner and got the owners of the other cars to come out and move their cars as well. During the shooting of this project, the genuine friendliness and interest of the local people about the project was very rewarding. They all seemed to share my concern for this part of Americana that is slowly slipping away.
